The Kano State government has started a new program to train over 72 secondary school teachers on modern fish farming. The goal is for the teachers to then go back and train their students, giving them practical skills they can use to become self-reliant.

The State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, said that the government is dedicated to giving students skills that will help them make a living after they finish school. He stated, “The Kano Government is committed to providing entrepreneurship training to secondary school students to make them self-reliant after leaving school.”

He also added that giving students vocational skills is the best way to improve their lives and that the government wants to give them the tools they need to take care of themselves and their families.

The training is a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Kano Educational Resource Department (KERD). It includes hands-on practice at newly built fish ponds.

This is a smart and practical move by the Kano State government. By focusing on a “train-the-trainer” model, the government can reach a very large number of students.

Also, teaching vocational skills like fish farming directly addresses the problem of youth unemployment by helping young people create their own jobs and contribute to the local economy.

The initiative is well-suited to the state, as fish farming can help improve food security and is a growing business.

However, the program’s long-term success will depend on more than just the training. It will also require continued funding and support from the government to make sure schools have the materials they need, like fish ponds, to teach these skills effectively.
