The Yobe State Government has given 40 new Massey Ferguson 375 tractors to local farmers and farmer groups for free, as part of its agricultural empowerment program.

According to Ms. Hajiya Aishatu Tijjani, a spokesperson for the Yobe State Ministry of Agriculture, the beneficiaries included the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), as well as private farms like AMFAZAT, FA’IZA, and RAISA Farms.

In addition to the tractors, the government is also providing farmers with bags of NPK fertilizer at a 50% discount.

The chairman of the Yobe chapter of AFAN, Mr. Usman Ngari, confirmed that his association received one tractor. He said, “I can confirm to you that the beneficiaries are known farmers in Yobe, who were selected by a committee earlier constituted across 17 local government areas.”

Mr. Ngari also shared positive news for consumers, noting that the price of grains has dropped significantly. He said, “By this time last year, a bag of sorghum was sold at N100,000. It is now going for about N26,000 in the market.”

He suggested that the government should work to ensure the prices of other food items also drop to prevent grain prices from rising again.

This action by the Yobe State government is a practical way to support local farmers and boost food production. Providing tractors and discounted fertilizer can help farmers increase their yields and make a better living. The drop in grain prices is a good sign for food security, showing that the government’s efforts may be having a positive effect on the market.
