Katsina State government has procured fertiliser for distribution to farmers at N25,000 per bag, offering relief ahead of the 2026 planting season, the Daily Trust reported.
The state said it procured a large quantity to make the input accessible to farmers at a time when commercial fertiliser prices have remained a significant burden for smallholders across northern Nigeria.
Fertiliser cost is one of the main constraints facing Nigerian farmers, particularly in the north where maize, sorghum, millet, and cowpea production depends heavily on it. Commercial prices have stayed elevated since the removal of fuel subsidies in 2023 pushed up transportation and production costs.
Katsina’s move is part of a broader pattern of state-level agricultural interventions as governors seek to cushion the effects of rising input costs ahead of the wet season, which typically begins between April and June across much of northern Nigeria.
