U.S. Report Flags Nigeria’s Livestock and Feed Trade Opportunities in 2026 Investment Plan

A United States Department of Agriculture report published in April 2026 has highlighted key trade components of Nigeria’s National Agri-Food Systems Investment Plan for 2026 to 2027, pointing to opportunities and gaps in the country’s livestock and feed sectors.

The report, filed by the USDA’s Office of Agricultural Affairs in Lagos, noted that Nigeria exported approximately 3.3 million head of cattle in 2022, generating $283 million in revenue. In 2025, the country imported $50 million in animal feed and related products.

The NASIP 2026 to 2027 is Nigeria’s third national agricultural investment plan, following earlier versions in 2011 to 2014 and 2017 to 2020. It was developed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, FAO, state governments, and other bodies.

The plan is structured around Nigeria’s Nigeria Agenda 2050, the National Development Plan 2021 to 2025, and the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy 2022 to 2027. It also seeks to align Nigeria’s farm sector with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the ECOWAS Agricultural Policy.

The USDA report identified potential opportunities for U.S. livestock product exporters to support Nigeria’s National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, particularly in cattle, poultry, and animal breeding initiatives. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, created in 2024, is actively seeking partnerships to improve dual-purpose breeds suited to Nigeria’s climate.
