In a major move to boost agriculture and protect the environment, the Ezza South Local Government Area in Ebonyi State has launched an initiative to plant 10,000 economic trees and 30,000 palm seedlings. The project is part of a wider plan to strengthen food security, control erosion, and improve the local economy.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

Mrs. Nwali, the Council Chairperson, explained that the trees, which include mango, cashew, orange, and rubber, will be planted in schools, farms, and communities. The palm seedlings are being distributed to community leaders and residents to encourage both private and communal farming. The local government is providing the trees at no cost and overseeing the planting process.

Mrs. Nwali also said that all government officials in the area have been directed to maintain personal farms. She emphasized that “no land in Ezza South should remain unused.” She also mentioned that the local government has provided farmers with essential inputs like fertilizers and agrochemicals to boost crop yields.

Broader Agricultural Efforts

The council’s efforts go beyond the tree planting project. According to the chairperson, Ezza South has significantly expanded its production of staple crops, including cassava, maize, yam, cocoyam, and rice, and is also supporting poultry and fish farming. As a further part of their effort to support farmers, the local government has started building a 5-kilometer concrete road to make it easier for farmers to transport their goods to markets.

Mrs. Nwali pointed to the low prices of food in local markets as proof that the council’s agricultural projects are already having a positive effect on the community.

This initiative is a powerful example of how a local government can take direct action to address key issues like food security and climate change.

The project’s focus on planting economic trees and palm seedlings is a smart, long-term investment that can provide food, a stable income, and help protect the environment from soil erosion.

The move to mandate that government officials farm their own land is a unique and practical approach. It shows a strong commitment from the local government to lead by example and directly involve the public sector in food production.

If successful, this comprehensive strategy, which combines tree planting, input distribution, road construction, and community involvement, could serve as a model for other local governments across the country.
