A delegation from the state of California, led by Secretary of Transportation Mr. Adetokunbo Omishakin, has visited the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss a partnership on climate and economic issues.
The collaboration aims to leverage Nigeria’s large population and workforce to drive sustainable growth while addressing climate change.
The partnership will focus on several key areas, which includes Climate-Smart Agriculture which is an integrated approach to managing landscapes to address the linked challenges of food security and climate change. It involves farming practices that sustainably increase productivity, build resilience to climate change, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The partnership will also focus on technology and industrial trade as California shows that it is open to sharing its expertise and engaging in technology transfer, especially regarding green growth initiatives.
The discussions also covered strategies for reducing methane emissions and improving plastic recycling, which are critical for environmental sustainability.
Also, the two sides in their talk explored the use of carbon markets as a way to attract investment for climate-friendly projects.
Ms. Tenioye Majekodunmi, the Director-General of the NCCC, expressed that the partnership is a timely opportunity for Nigeria to accelerate President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
Mr. Omishakin noted that California, which has been a leader in environmental issues for over 50 years, is ready to exchange ideas and expertise to drive mutual economic growth and advance climate goals.
This collaboration could be a significant step for Nigeria’s development. By partnering with California, an economy known for its technological innovation and climate policies, Nigeria can gain access to valuable knowledge, skills, and investment.
This could help the country transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy, create new jobs, and improve food security through the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices.
